Making a Cleaning Schedule

Cleaning is something that I do every single day. There are things that just need to be cleaned on a daily basis. For example, dishes need to be washed, counters need to be wiped, floors need to be swept and beds need to be made. The rest of everything can be done on a schedule.

There are tons of sites out there that will make a schedule for you. I’m not going to do that. You need to make your own based on your work schedule, what size home you live in and what you have in your home. You may have carpet in every room while someone else has tile. Both take different amount of time to clean and different tools to do it.

I will however guide you, on what should be cleaned and how often. The rest is up to you!

how to make a cleaning schedule

Bathrooms – I clean these every other week. If you have children or share a bathroom with multiple people, it might be a weekly job. Every time I clean the bathroom I clean all the mirrors, toilets, sinks, floors. I do the bathtub and shower every other time, so once a month. That’s what works for us.

Kitchen – I clean our counters and sweep the floor every day. Then on Saturday mornings I clean the sink, organize, throw away food from the refrigerator, and wipe down the tile back splash. I highly suggest cleaning your kitchen every week. It really is the dirtiest room in the house.

Living Room – I clean up the living room once a week as well. I pick up whatever is on the coffee table, vacuum the rug, and dust. Then every two months I vacuum the couches and wash the blankets. Don’t forget about curtains and ceiling fans. Do what works for you.

Bedrooms – Make your bed every day. It sounds silly to some people, but it really does make a huge difference, especially when you are going to sleep at night. Don’t forget to pledge/dust all your wood furniture in your bedroom and clean the floors too. I also like to reorganize all of the drawers and donate any unused clothes twice per year.

Floors –  This is by far my least favorite thing to clean. I’ve mentioned it before, so you’re already aware of the angst it causes me. We have carpet in our bedrooms and laminate in our living rooms. I only clean the floors every month. In the meantime, I sweep and swiffer the floors and try to keep them as clean as possible. I know people that clean the floors in their homes every week and some that do it every day. It all depends on how much square footage you have and how often to you like to do it. You could divide your house into rooms and clean the floor of a different room every week.

Filters– Change your filters every three months. This includes any water filters, air filters and the like.
